EDO 2024: Why Peter Obi’s Obidient Movement Endorsed APC’s Okpebholo Over Akpata

The Obidient Movement in Edo State has endorsed APC candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo for the upcoming governorship election, citing his deep connections with the people. This decision has sparked controversy within the Labour Party.

In a surprising move, the Obidient Movement in Edo State has thrown its support behind Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, ahead of the September 21, 2024, governorship election. This endorsement, which diverges from the movement’s usual alignment with the Labour Party, has stirred significant controversy.

The Obidient Movement, renowned for its grassroots mobilization during the 2023 presidential election in support of Labour Party’s Peter Obi, has now endorsed Okpebholo due to his strong connections with the local populace. The group’s coordinator, Ikhuenbor Igbinevbo, emphasized that their decision was driven by a desire for good governance, fairness, and accountability, qualities they believe Okpebholo embodies.

“We supported Peter Obi in the 2023 election because we felt it was the turn of the Igbo. Right now in Edo, it is the turn of Esan, and we need the most qualified to work for everybody, not a stranger,” Igbinevbo stated during a meeting with Okpebholo.

The Labour Party’s Edo State chapter has vehemently condemned the Obidient Movement’s support for the APC candidate. Sam Uruopa, the Edo LP Publicity Secretary and Public Relations Officer, criticized the endorsement, labeling it absurd and inconsistent with the movement’s principles.

“It is absurd to hear that Obidient Movement is supporting Okpebholo. The Obidient Movement is synonymous with the Labour Party and integral members of the party. They cannot be Obidient Movement and work against the party’s candidate, Olumide Akpata,” Uruopa declared.

Receiving the endorsement, Okpebholo expressed gratitude and assured the Obidient Movement of his commitment to surpassing the achievements of the current administration if elected. He promised transformative governance and urged the electorate to vote out the incumbents for the betterment of future generations.

“If they had done well, I would not have contested. I urge you to punish them with your votes because if you leave it for them, our unborn children will suffer,” Okpebholo asserted.

The Obidient Movement, initially formed to support Peter Obi’s presidential bid, has evolved into a significant political force advocating for transparency and accountability. Despite its roots in the Labour Party, the movement insists on supporting candidates who align with its core values, regardless of party affiliation.

As the Edo governorship election approaches, the endorsement of Okpebholo by the Obidient Movement highlights the complexities and shifting dynamics within Nigerian politics. The decision underscores the movement’s commitment to local representation and good governance, even as it faces criticism from its traditional allies.

The coming months will reveal the impact of this endorsement on the political landscape in Edo State and the broader implications for the Obidient Movement’s influence and future direction.
