Federal Government’s Warning on Official Documents Disclosure
The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), George Akume, has issued a stern warning against the unauthorized disclosure or leakage of official documents during a workshop in Abuja. The workshop, organized by the Bureau for Public Service Reforms (BPSR), underscored the critical importance of confidentiality in maintaining national security and unity.
Legal Ramifications and Enforcement
SGF Akume emphasized that unauthorized leakage of sensitive official documents constitutes a felony under Nigerian law. Citing Section 97 (2) of the Criminal Code Act, he highlighted the legal repercussions, including potential imprisonment for up to one year for offenders employed in the public service. Akume reiterated that there are no justifications or defenses recognized in the Constitution or the Freedom of Information Act for such actions.
Government Measures and Regulatory Focus
Akume recalled proactive steps taken by the government to curb document leaks, such as issuing service-wide circulars through the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation. These circulars, initially introduced in August 2021 and reinforced in February 2024, aim to prevent the unauthorized dissemination of official information, particularly through social media platforms. He also stressed the need for stringent regulation of civil society organizations utilizing the Freedom of Information Act, cautioning against their potential misuse to harass or misinform the public.
