Obidigbo Reveals Britain’s Involvement in Nnamdi Kanu’s Detention, Warns Igbo Politicians

Dr. Chike Obidigbo cautions South-East politicians against exacerbating Nnamdi Kanu’s situation with political grandstanding, advocating for quiet diplomacy and shedding light on Britain’s complicity in his ordeal.

Dr. Chike Obidigbo, a respected elder statesman and President of the Osisioma Foundation, has cautioned politicians, particularly those from the South-East, to refrain from worsening the situation of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Obidigbo emphasized the need for quiet diplomacy rather than politicizing the ongoing demand for Kanu’s release.

In a statement released in Enugu, Obidigbo expressed regret over the actions of some Igbo political elites, whom he accused of acting out of ignorance and self-aggrandizement. He stressed that their overzealous behavior is counterproductive and only complicates Kanu’s situation.

Obidigbo highlighted the delicate nature of Kanu’s incarceration and advocated for a diplomatic approach to achieve a political solution. He criticized the politicians for not understanding the complexities involved and for politicizing Kanu’s release.

Obidigbo pointed out that Britain’s silence regarding Kanu’s predicament is a significant concern. He suggested that Kanu’s agitation negatively affected British economic interests in Nigeria, leading to their involvement in his rendition. He stated that Britain’s actions, including Kanu’s abduction in Kenya and subsequent rendition to Nigeria, reveal a double standard and hypocrisy.

Historical Comparisons and Current Implications

Drawing a parallel with the 1984 attempted abduction of Alhaji Umaru Dikko, Obidigbo noted the stark contrast in Britain’s reaction, emphasizing their persistent exploitation of Nigeria. He warned that the British government’s stance and actions are long-term destabilizing strategies against Nigeria’s socioeconomic independence.

The Broader Impact on Biafra Agitation

Obidigbo asserted that the Biafra agitation has surpassed Kanu, with other elements continuing the struggle. He emphasized that the real obstacle to Biafra’s actualization is the lack of involvement of genuine elites, excluding imposed leaders and greedy political figures.

Call for Strategic Action

He called for genuine efforts to secure Kanu’s release by engaging the National Security Adviser (NSA) and influential international ambassadors, including those from Britain, the USA, China, and Russia. Obidigbo warned that without the support of these powerful nations, the struggle for Biafra would persist until a referendum is achieved.

In conclusion, Obidigbo urged politicians to adopt a more strategic and diplomatic approach to Kanu’s release, avoiding actions that compound his troubles. He reiterated that a peaceful resolution and Kanu’s freedom would require a concerted effort from both local and international stakeholders, emphasizing the need for a referendum to address the demands of IPOB and its supporters.
